Ministering to our Community

Communion for Home Bound Members   Clergy and members of the Evangelism Committee take communion to home bound members and nursing home residents who request this service.

Aftercare   Central sponsors Aftercare, a monthly program for mentally challenged adults who live in Group Homes in Spartanburg County. Started in 1976 by the United Methodist Women of Central, the program is under the Missions Committee as well as a part of the Mental Health Association of the Piedmont. Aftercare meets the fourth Thursday of each month. Volunteers transport, set up, and prepare for the programs.

Spartanburg Soup Kitchen  Volunteers from  Central serve Sunday lunch for the impoverished on the second Sunday every other month.

Central Knitters: Purling and Praying   This group knits scarves, mittens, and hats for the homeless. They also knit prayer shawls for Central’s shut-ins and new babies. They meet on Wednesdays in the Parlor from 4:00pm - 6:00pm.

S.P.I.H.N.   Central is among twelve host churches and eight support churches forming the Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network (SPIHN). Homeless families are provided shelter and meals at the church for a week, several times a year. Visit SPIHN's website for more information.

Saint Luke's Free Medical Clinic   St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic is open two evenings a week for those individuals and/or families with a low income. Staffed by volunteers, this local clinic is located on North Dean Street. Central gives financial support to this ministry.

T.O.T.A.L. Ministries   TOTAL Ministries, an acronym for Telling Others They Are Loved, was founded in 1983 by twelve local churches. This local ministry sees an average of 290 Spartanburg County clients a month; it helps with such needs as rent or house payments, food, clothing, prescription drugs, utilities, burned-out houses, and other miscellaneous needs. Central members donate to their food pantry, send financial support, and help meet other needs as requested.

ARCH (Arcadia Children's Ministry)  Ministers to children in the Arcadia Community after school and at Christmas time.

The Bethlehem Center of Spartanburg   The Bethlehem Center serves the needs of the Highland Community and other parts of Spartanburg County and aims to strengthen families physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially, educationally, and intellectually. Visit their website for more information. Central participates in many of the programs and fundraisers, and sends financial support to this ministry.

Citizen Scholars Program   The Citizen Scholars program is a Spartanburg County Foundation program. It is designed to assist Spartanburg County students with academic potential who would not normally attend college.

Habitat for Humanity   Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and aspires to make decent, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action. Visit Spartanburg Habitat to learn how this ministry helps our community and how you can help.

Salkehatchie   Salkehatchie Summer Service is a pioneering servant ministry at thirty-four sites in South Carolina high school and college age youth, adult community leaders, and persons of different cultures work together to upgrade substandard housing. The program promotes community cooperative efforts and provides participants with opportunities for personal growth and service.

Spartanburg Shares  A medical equipment loan and collection closet.  Volunteers may work two hours once a month.

Green Congregations  Works with the Tree Coalition on environmental projects in our church and community.
