CONFIRMATION CLASSES FOR '07

In the spring of the year, Confirmation Classes will be offered at Central for all 6th graders who are interested in exploring what a commitment to Jesus Christ and church membership entails.  We will study membership in the Body of Christ and membership in the United Methodist Church .  Confirmation involves a commitment on the part of those who would be confirmed, if they so choose to do so, and also on the part of their parents and mentors.

If you are interested in your child’s participation, please call Luther Rickenbaker in the Church Office.

   HANDBELLS AT CENTRAL

Central United Methodist of Spartanburg has used handbells for worship, performance, and music education for almost forty years.  Former Director of Music and Converse professor Jane Rolandi began the program in the sixities, starting with a youth handbell choir – the Central Chimers – that still exists today.  After Jane’s retirement, Al Jeter began directing the Central Chimers and is now in his thirtieth year with the group.  More recently, an adult handbell choir began under the direction of Pam Nelson, then Henry Hampton, and now Al Jeter.  This choir is now called the Central Carillon.

Central choirs ring music using five octaves of Schulmerich handbells plus a two-octave set of Malmark bells for antiphonal pieces and doubling bell assignments.  Sixteen teenagers with the Chimers rehearse every Sunday, and eighteen adults with the Carillon rehearse every Wednesday, all using a full range of bell equipment such as tone chimes, mallets, and other special effects.  Several of the adults participated as Central Chimers when they were teenagers.

In addition to playing at church and in local bell festivals, the Central handbell groups have attended festivals and workshops in Charleston, Atlanta, St. Augustine, Tampa, Orlando, Birmingham, Nassau [3 times], and Mexico.  Ringers prepare difficult concert repertoire and then enjoy the fun and fellowship along with the musical experience.  At the 2001 festival in Birmingham for members of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, a combined Central choir of teenagers and adults played a rousing Sousa march for handbells in addition to other required festival music.  Then, in 2005, another combined choir traveled to Orlando for the regional festival and enjoyed staying directly across the street from the Universal Studios theme parks.

The Central handbell program is indebted to the members of the congregation who over the years have supported all musical efforts, subsidized many fundraising schemes, and provided the various equipment necessary for successful handbell ringing.  Both choirs remember the primary purpose to provide musical experiences for church worship, and they enjoy opportunities to ring beyond the church and to share the handbell experience with other groups.
